Our Mission:

To offer a safe nonjudgmental place to access support and services for those in need.

History:

The Sudbury Action Centre for Youth began in 1986 as an employment centre which offered casual labour jobs to people just released from prison. Within a year it became obvious that many youth registering for these types of jobs needed specialized support and a Youth Drop In Centre was opened for youth between the ages of 16 to 24. Youth programming followed and today the Youth Drop In Centre offers:

  • A Housing Support Worker
  • An award winning Peer Mentor Program
  • Trained youth workers to support and refer youth to community support
  • A hot meal every night
  • Recreational activities at no charge
  • A school teacher in the Drop in every afternoon to assist youth with their educational requirements.

Many clients in the Casual Labour Centre also struggle with addiction issues and in August 1992 the Agency, under contract to the Sudbury & District Health Unit, opened “The Point” needle exchange program , and later in 1998 an IDU (injection drug use) / HIV outreach program, which operates five days a week. These two programs use the Harm Reduction model to help injection drug users lessen the harm to themselves and their community, through education, supplies and support.
